CREATIVE ARTS

The arts refer to the theory as well as the physical expression of creativity that is found in human cultures and societies. Main constituents if the arts include performing arts (among them theatre, music and dance), literature (including drama, prose and poetry) and visual arts (including painting, drawing, film making, sculpting, ceramics, architecture and photography).

Some forms of art combine a visual element together with performance (for example, cinematography) or written word together with artwork (for example comics). From the prehistoric cave paintings to the modern day films, arts serve as a vessel for conveying humankind’s relationship with the environment and for storytelling.

VISUAL ARTS

Architecture. This refers to the art and science of designing structures and buildings. The term architecture comes from the Greek word arkhitekton that means master builder or director of works. A wider definition includes the environment’s design from the macro level of town planning, landscape architecture and urban design to the micro level of creating furniture. Architectural design must address both the cost and the feasibility for the builder, as well as function and the aesthetics for the user. In the modern usage, architecture refers to the art and discipline of creating, or inferring an implied or apparent plan of a complex system or object.

Ceramics. Ceramic art is an art that is made from ceramic materials (such as clay) which may take different forms like tableware, sculpture, figurines, pottery and tile. Some of the ceramic products are considered fine art while others are considered industrial, applied art objects or decorative. Ceramics can also be considered to be artefacts in archeology. This kind of art can be made by a single person or by a group of people. In a ceramic or pottery factory, a group of people is tasked with designing, manufacturing and decorating the pottery. Products that come from pottery are sometimes referred to as art pottery. In the so called one-person pottery studio, potters or ceramists produce what is known as studio pottery. In the modern ceramic engineering usage, ceramics is defined as the art and science of making objects from non-metallic, inorganic materials by the action of heat. It excludes mosaic and glass made from glass tesserae.

Conceptual art. This is an art where the ideas or concepts involved in the work takes precedence over traditional material concerns and aesthetic.

Drawing. This refers to a means of making an image by the use of any of a wide variety of techniques and tools. It involves making marks on a surface through the application of pressure from a tool or by moving a tool across a surface. Common tools that are used for this include: pen, pencils, inked brushes, wax color pencils, markers, pastels, charcoals and crayons. Digital tools that can simulate these effects are also applied. The major techniques that are used in drawing include, hatching, line drawing, random hatching, blending, stippling, scribbling and crosshatching. An artist who excels in drawing is called a drafter. Drawing may be used for purposes of creating art that is used in cultural industries like animation, comics and illustrations.

Photography. This refers to a form of art that creates photographs in accordance with the photographer’s creative vision.

Other forms include sculpture, painting, applied arts and video games.
