What is Area?
Area is amount of space occupied by a figure/shape on a plane or flat surface. Area is a two-dimensional value and in measured in square units.
In order to estimate area of a given figure, calculate number of squares units that figure occupies. Consider below criteria to calculate area -
To estimate area of a figure, count total number of squares. Count full squares, half squares and almost full squares.
Example 1: To estimate area of a rectangular figure.
Rectangle covers -
Full squares: 5 X 7 = 35
Half Squares: 0
Almost full squares: 0
Total estimate = 35 square units.
If it is a rectangular field and each square dimension is 1 ft X 1 ft, then estimated area of rectangular field is 35 square feet.
Example 2: To estimate area of an irregular figure
Full squares: 17
Half squares or almost half squares: 2, equivalent to 1 full square
Almost full squares = 3, count it as 3 full square
Total estimate = 17 + 1 + 3 = 21 square unit
