Art is everywhere around us and it is present since always. Art is a way of human creative expression, that provokes our senses, our thoughts, and makes a variety of feelings emerge. Art results in a final product. The product of art is called a work of art, and the person who engages in any kind of art is called an artist. The purpose of art is self-expression. Art is very personal, it can provoke different emotions in different people. There are so many different types of art, so there are different works of art and different types of artists accordingly.

Visual arts

The three classical branches of art are painting, sculpture, and architecture. They are part of visual arts. When we say visual art, we mean the art that we can perceive with our sense of sight. That is why we call this art - visual. The other forms of visual art are drawing, photography, printmaking, design, ceramics, video, filmmaking, crafts. Each form has different characteristics and elements.

Drawing is when we make an illustration or image by making marks on a surface with a pressure of graphite pencils, pen, and ink, inked brushes, wax color pencils, pastels, markers, crayons, or digital tools (pens). In drawing the main element is the line. Different lines are used when creating a drawing. These types of work art are mostly monochrome, but they can be in different colors, too. In drawing only the lines are in different colors, the surface is not colored. A drawing artist can be a drafter, illustrator, portraitist, sketch artist, calligrapher, etc.

In painting, the image is created when on surfaces (paper, glass, canvas, leather, wall, wood, leather, etc.) are applied pigments (colors), which are the basic artistic element in the painting. Different materials and techniques are used. Oil painting, watercolor painting, pastel painting, are just some of the painting techniques. A person who paints is called a painter.

In sculpture are created three-dimensional artworks. They have a volume, which is the basic art element in sculpture. The sculptures are not created on a two-dimensional surface, we can see and touch each side. They can be made from stone, clay, wood, metal, paper, plastic, glass, etc. Not each sculpture is made by hand. Nowadays an artist can create a design and pays a fabricator to produce it. Also, 3D printing technology can be applied to creating sculptures. An artist who makes sculptures is called a sculptor.

Architecture, just like sculpture, is three-dimensional art. Architecture is creating buildings and structures with an aesthetical value that humans use for living, work, fun, etc. Those are buildings with different purposes. These include houses, flats, bridges, museums, theaters. Architecture is the process and the product of planning, designing, and constructing buildings or any other structures. The person who plans, designs, and oversees the construction of buildings is called an architect.

Design is a plan or specification for the construction of an object or system. It is a visual look or a shape given to a certain object to make it more attractive, make it more comfortable, or improve another characteristic. A designer is a person who makes designs.

Printmaking in art is a process in which images are transferred from a matrix onto another surface. The surface most often is paper or fabric. Traditional printmaking techniques include woodcut, etching, engraving, and lithography. Modern artists have expanded available techniques to include screen-printing.

Filmmaking is the process of making a motion picture, from an initial conception and research, through scriptwriting, shooting and recording, animation or other special effects, editing, sound and music work, and finally distribution to an audience.

Photography is the art, application, and practice of creating durable images by recording light or other electromagnetic radiation, either electronically (image sensor), or chemically (photographic film). A photographer is a person who makes photographs.

Artworks that are made of ceramic materials, including clay, are considered ceramic arts. The pottery, tableware, figurines are just some examples of ceramic artworks.

In a broader definition of art are included, music, theater, dance, as well as other performing arts. Also, literature and interactive media are part of the art.
