days of the week

When the sun rises, it is morning. Every morning, we wake up, brush our teeth, and eat our breakfast. Then, we carry on with our activities until the sunset. As the sun begins to set, and the brightly lit sky begins to dim, it is called evening.  As the sky becomes dark black, it is called night. We sleep in the night. This completes one day.

There are seven days in a week. When one week gets over, another one starts. In this lesson, we will learn about seven days of the week.

Seven days of the week

There are seven days in a week and they follow this order:

Monday

Tuesday

Wednesday

Thursday

Friday

Saturday

Sunday

You will need to remember this order of days. Repeat them several times to memorize.

Out of these seven days, there are some days where most people go to work or to school – these are called workdays. Then, there are other free days where people are more likely to rest, do outside activities like going to the park, or to the cinema which is common during weekends.

Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

When we wake up every morning, it is a bright new day. We call it ‘today’. Find out - What day is today?

One day before today is called ‘yesterday’. Yesterday is gone. Now, that you know what day is today, can you tell what day was yesterday?

One day after today is called ‘tomorrow’. Tomorrow is still to come. If you know what day is today, can you tell what day is tomorrow?

Let's do a short activity.

If today is Tuesday, what day was yesterday?

Do you know the answer? If not, then go back to the order of days in the week. It is Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. What comes before Tuesday? Monday. So, yesterday was Monday.

If yesterday was Monday and today is Tuesday, then what day will be tomorrow?

Let's repeat the order of days in the week.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.

So, what comes after Tuesday in this order? Wednesday. So, tomorrow is Wednesday.

A week starts Monday or Sunday

According to international standards, Monday is the first day of the week. It is followed by Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Sunday is the seventh and the last day of the week. Several countries including the United States and Canada, consider Sunday as the start of the week.

When is the weekend?

As the first day of the week varies in different cultures, so does the weekend. The Christian or Western world marks Sunday as their day of rest and worship, while Muslims refer to Friday as their day of rest and prayer. The Jewish calendar counts Saturday – the Sabbath – as the day of rest and worship.
