Buses, boats, trains, and planes! What’s your favorite way to go from one place to another? Today, we will learn about modes of transportation.
Transportation is a general word for all the methods people use to move themselves and their goods from one place to another.
In the olden days, walking was the main method of transportation until humans domesticated animals. Camels, horses, and cattle then carried goods and people. More than 5000 years ago people invented the wheel. This allowed animals to pull carts. In ancient times, boats, bullock carts, and horse-driven carriages were the only means of transportation.
Nowadays quicker means of transportation have been developed.
The different means of transportation are divided into three main categories:
It is the transportation of people and goods on roads. Different types of vehicles are used to cover distances.
Bicycles, motorbikes, and scooters are used for shorter distances. They have two wheels.
Cars and taxis can also be used to cover short and long distances. They have four wheels. A taxi is also called 'cab'. It is a type of car with a driver you pay money to take you from one place to another. Which is your favorite car?
Other modes of land transport are - trucks, buses, and trains. Trucks are used for covering long distances and carrying heavy loads. Buses are also an important mode of transportation. Almost all states in a country have their bus services and thousands of people travel on them. Trains carry people over long distances. We go from one state to another in trains. Now some countries are also connected with rail lines.
It is the transportation of goods or people on water bodies. It is also the cheapest and oldest mode of transportation. The boats are used for short distances.
Sailboats a relatively small boat that uses wind power to propel it forward. When the wind is strong enough, sailboats can move very quickly.
Ships are used for covering large distances. Cargo ships like oil tankers and freighters are used for transportation of goods like oil, cars, and food items. Water transportation consumes less energy and allows larger shipping loads compared to other modes of transport.
It is the transportation of people and goods by air. Today, almost all countries in the world are interconnected by air transportation. We can go from one country to another country in very little time with airplanes.
Airplanes were invented by the Wright Brothers. The place where airplanes take off or land is called the airport.
Shorter distances can be covered with helicopters.
Some people fly on air balloon to travel very short distances and this is so fun.
