doubling numbers

There is one bird sitting on the branch.
There are two birds sitting on the branch.

The birds doubled from 1 to 2.

In this lesson, we are going to study about doubling numbers.

What is doubling?

It means taking a number and adding the same number to itself.

Show five fingers of your left hand. What will you do if you are to double these five fingers?

You will show the other five fingers of your right hand.

So, how many total fingers are there? 10

We doubled the five fingers of one hand and we got 10 fingers. That means, 5 + 5 = 10

Thus, you see doubling is simply adding the same number to the given number.

For example, there are three cats. If we are to double these cats, how many cats will be there?

So, if we double 3 cats, we get 6 cats. This means double of 3 is 6. That is 3 + 3 = 6

Alright, now that you have understood the concept of doubling numbers, let's practice doubling numbers from 1 to 5.

Here is a butterfly doubling worksheet. The first row shows a butterfly with some spots on the left-wing.  In the second row, we put the same number of spots on the right-wing. This means we double the spots. Can you count the total number of spots on each butterfly after doubling?

1 + 1 = 2

Double of 1 is 2

2 + 2 = 4

Double of 2 is 4

3 + 3 = 6

Double of 3 is 6

4 + 4 = 8

Double of 4 is 8

5 + 5 = 10

Double of 5 is 10

Try to complete the following table by yourself. Find the double of the given numbers.

6 6 + 6 =       ?
7 7 + 7 = ?
8 8 + 8 =  ?
9 9 + 9 =  ?
10 10 + 10 =  ?

Let’s try another kind of question. Jane has 15 marbles and Mary has double the marbles that Jane has. How many marbles does Mary have?

Mary has double of 15 marbles. So, 15 + 15 = 30.

Here is a fun game to practice doubling numbers. You will need one dice, white paper, ruler, and colored markers.

Take white paper. Using a ruler and a colored marker, draw the following table of numbers.

You can play either alone or with a friend.

To play alone - Roll a dice and double your answer. Using a marker color the answer in the table. When you get all four in a row colored, you win.

To play with a friend - Take turns to roll a dice. Double your answer and cover the answer with a colored marker. The second person will color the answer with a different colored marker. Whoever gets all four in a row first, wins!

Here is another game you can play with your friend. It is called the Space Race.

Activity 2: How fast can you double? Double the numbers on the track and write the answers as you go. Use a timer to see how long it takes you to finish the race.

If you wish you can draw this picture on a white paper using a pencil or colored marker and play this game with your friend!
