What is Calendar?

A Calendar is basically a chart or a diagram that shows different days of the year. We devised the mechanism of a calendar to divide time into intervals of a day, week, month, year, and century. The three principal calendars are the Gregorian, Jewish, and Islamic Calendars. A calendar helps us to determine the date of an event in past, present, or future. With Calendar, we plan our future events and activities. We relate to an event with the dates, and the calendar helps us to derive the date and day of an event.

How does a Calendar look like?

A calendar can be of a single page or multiple pages. You must have seen one of them on your desk or on your computer. There are many ways the calendar can be stored and represented. A calendar can help you to tell you how far is your birthday and on which day it is falling. When is your school vacation starting and how many weeks of vacation you can plan. Interesting, isn't it?

Here we will be learning about the Gregorian Calendar.

A calendar lists 365 days of a year. It breaks these days into months and weeks.

How to read a calendar?

A calendar is expressed in Days, Weeks, and Months.

Day: The smallest interval or unit in a calendar is a day. 24 hours makes one day. We represent days as Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. These days occur in a definite sequence and repeat. So what will be the next day after Sunday? It will again start with Monday. Hence this sequence and repetition continue throughout the calendar.

Week: The collection of these seven days Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday is one week. Each day of the week is repeated after 7 days.

Month: The next larger interval or unit in a calendar is a month and twelve months make a year. January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November and December come in sequence and repeat every year. So what is the next month after December? It is January again!

Year: These 12 months together make a year. Each calendar represents one particular year.

Note:

1. No fixed number of days or weeks make a month, if nothing else is specified, we take:

2.  There are two kinds of years, ordinary and leap year. An ordinary year has 365 days and a leap year has 366 days. The reason is leap year has 29 days in February and the ordinary year has 28 days.

Date Format

In most countries of the world, dates are written in order DAY/MONTH/YEAR, for example, 18 September 2020 is written as 18/9/2020. In the USA, dates are recorded in MONTH/DAY/YEAR format, hence it will be written as 9/18/2020
