Here we will learn how to multiply two decimal numbers. Let us take an example and follow the below steps to derive the product.
Example 1: 12.25 × 3.2
Step1: Multiply the numbers as you do in the case of whole numbers, ignoring the decimal point.
Step2: Place the decimal point in the product so that the number of decimal places in the product is the sum of the decimal places in the factors.
12.25 ----> 2 decimal places
3.2 -----> 1 decimal place
So the product has 3 decimal places ==> 39.200
Example 2: 0.75 × 0.05
Multiply without the decimal point: 75 × 5 = 375
0.75 has 2 decimal places, 0.05 has two decimal places. The total decimal places in the product will be 4. As the number of digits in the answers is less than 4, add a '0'(zero) before 3 and then place the decimal point.
The answer is 0.0375.
Note: Add zeros to the right of the decimal point if the total number of digits in the answer is less than the total number of decimals places.
